The Member States agree to reduce gas demand by 15% until the spring

The extraordinary Energy Council reached a political agreement on the proposal for a regulation to adopt coordinated measures to reduce gas demand, which is part of the package presented by the European Commission on 20 July along with an Explanatory Communication and a Reduction Plan which incentivises the use of alternative fuels, among other measures.

Specifically, Member States commit themselves to an initial 15% reduction in this gas demand compared to their average consumption between 1 August and 31 March 2023.

But, unlike the Commission’s initial proposal, the agreement specifies exemptions and options to request to waive the mandatory reduction target, so as to reflect the particular situations of the Member States; which is in line with what Spain was asking for.

The Third Vice-President and Minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, commented that this agreement highlights the importance of each country reducing gas consumption as far as it deems appropriate.
