The Council adopts its negotiating position on the gas storage proposal
The Council agreed its negotiating mandate with the European Parliament on the proposal for a gas storage Regulation. Published on 23 March by the Commission, it aims to improve the EU’s security of supply in the current geopolitical context.

In particular, the agreement specifies the rules for underground gas storage and the options for accounting for liquefied natural gas reserves, while limiting the obligations to a certain volume of Member States’ annual gas consumption over the last five years.
The mandate also stipulates that Member States lacking storage facilities shall have access to the gas reserves of those who do and shall share the financial burden of the filling obligations.
