The Commission includes activities related to gas and nuclear energy in the Taxonomy

Regarding the Regulation on establishing a framework to facilitate sustainable investment (known as the Taxonomy Regulation), the European Commission presented the final text of the complementary Delegated Act classifying nuclear energy and gas as compatible with the transition towards climate neutrality under certain conditions and in a limited time horizon.

The final text introduces specific adjustments to the disclosure and verification criteria, among others. On gas, the objective of operating at 100% renewable or low-carbon energy by 2035 is retained, although the intermediate targets for 2026 and 2030 are cancelled. Regarding nuclear energy, its green rating will depend on the use of “safe” fuels from 2025, among other factors. As for next steps, the co-legislators will have, from when they are translated into all the official EU languages, four months, extendable to six, to decide for or against.

You will find this and other key European news, such as the informal Competitiveness Council or the new standardization strategy, as well as a look at the main meetings in the European institutions during the week of February 7 to 11, in our newsletter “The EU in Headlines”.
