Approval of fifth package of sanctions on Russia for invasion of Ukraine

Proposed by the European Commission and adopted by the Council two days later, this new package prohibits the importation of coal from Russia, as well as transactions with four of its banks, including the second largest, VTB.

Russian ships and Russian-operated vessels will also be prevented from accessing EU ports, with certain exemptions for basic necessities (agriculture, food, humanitarian aid and energy).

Moreover, European exports of technology, timber, seafood and spirits are halted; the list of sanctioned natural persons is expanded; and a general prohibition on Russian companies participating in EU public markets is added.

Likewise, Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen who, along with EU High Representative Josep Borrell, is meeting with the Ukrainian authorities in Kyiv on 8 April, said they are considering further sanctions, including on oil imports.
