CEOE WELCOMES CANADA AS THE LEADER OF FREE TRADE

CEOE’s President of the Committee on the US and Canada meets with Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food

The president of the Committee on the US and Canada under CEOE’s International Relations Commission, Joaquín de la Herrán, said that Canada is a leader in free trade and stressed that there is great potential for Canada in Spain, as well as for Spain in Canada, at the institutional meeting that preceded the Spain-Canada Business Meeting held today at CEOE’s headquarters, on the occasion of the visit of Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Lawrence MacAulay.

Meeting Canada

At the meeting, organized by CEOE in collaboration with the Canadian Embassy in Spain and the Federation of Food and Beverage Industries, FIAB, Joaquín de la Herrán asked for more meetings like this one with other sectors, for example the services sector, and he referred to the absence of Spanish banks in Canada and how some of our most important banks are contemplating a presence in that country. This would provide financial support to Spanish companies that invest in Canada.

Meanwhile, FIAB’s director general, Mauricio García de Quevedo, recalled the importance of Canada for the Spanish food and beverage industry on the first anniversary of CETA, underlining that Spanish agri-food exports to the North American country grew by 8% in the first half of 2018 and that Canada closes the ranking of the five priority markets for the international activity of the sector.

The Canadian minister, Lawrence MacAulay, said that his country believes in free trade and is open to it. This openness to trade, which allows Canada to sell its products in Spain and vice versa, for Spain to sell them in Canada, generates wealth and enables a positive outlook for trade in both countries. He also pointed out that both countries have many similarities, such as concern for the welfare of citizens and the elderly, among many others.
