ANA PLAZA UNDERLINES THE IMPORTANT ROLE PLAYED BY THE PRIVATE SECTOR IN ACHIEVING THE UN’S SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

CEOE’s Secretary General, Ana Plaza, underlined the important role that the private sector plays and will play as one of society’s transforming elements and a key actor in the implementation of the necessary measures to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, SDG, during the opening ceremony of the "Conference on business opportunities related to the United Nations’ SDGs in the field of digital transformation ", held at CEOE, with the collaboration of Agenda de la Empresa, Ametic, Funddatec and Zabala Innovation Consulting.

The private sector itself is undergoing a deep change, moving towards a digital future, where the growing importance of innovation and the application of technologies have a great impact on companies competing in markets that are becoming more and more global. Some of these trends pose, in addition, important challenges for the sustainability of companies. Aspects such as the urbanization of the planet, the scarcity of raw materials or the transformation of traditional sectors are some of them.

At present, the goal is not just for companies to be sustainable, but they also need to respond to society’s basic needs, where technologies become one of the engines for progress and an enabler to meet the challenges posed by the Sustainable Development Goals.

CEOE’s Digital Plan 2015

Ana Plaza indicated that this is reflected in the 2025 Digital Plan, prepared by CEOE’s Commission on the Digital Society, which includes a specific section dedicated to sustainability, always approached from the perspective of a responsible digital society. The idea is for products and services offered to citizens, businesses and Public Administrations to also provide social and environmental benefits. She cited important issues such as the reduction of the different existing gaps, for example those of a geographical, cultural or generational nature, gender gaps, or those caused by some type of disability.
